THIS WEEK IN MAINE MUSIC
The live album has evolved through the years, no doubt about it. Remember Peter Frampton and Kiss in the 70’s? Monster live albums, with overdubs and piped in, maxed out crowd noise. Those days are done. Nowadays it’s more about the vibe and less has become more. This is clearly apparent in the new album by David Karl Roberts titled “Live At Harry’s Hardware”. Harry’s Hardware is a nice little venue in Vermont, the state Roberts frequents when he’s not in Maine. The recording is a nice 25 minute snapshot of an intimate performance where Roberts shines as a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter.
The album starts with “Hunter’s Moon” which features a tasty array of unexpected chord changes and a really memorable post-chorus guitar riff to make it a really remarkable song. A perfect opener. From there, other highlights include “Midnight Train” which is reminiscent of classic Allman Brothers with its chord progression and well thought out vocals. “Drinking With The Chickens” is an instant classic and a snapshot of how one’s mind may wander during a pandemic. “If Even The Wind Forgets My Name” is a gorgeous closer and a fine ending to a quaint live album that will be a great listen around a campfire, lounging on the deck, or late night drive. Definitely check the album out and be amazed at the unedited, almost flawless musical and vocal performance.
