Downeast and Acadia

Bar Harbor. Say it with me. Bah Ha Bah.

It’s a beautiful town tourist town, an international destination and also the gateway to Acadia National Park where the first rays of sun hit the United States at the top of Cadillac Mountain. Mount Desert Island plays summertime host to countless travelers as they make this pilgrimage from their homes all over the world.

Downeast starts around the Belfast/Bucksport area, moves on toward Blue Hill and Acadia and continues on to Machias then to Lubec and Eastport – the eastern most towns in the U.S. Quoddy Head State Park sticks out on a peninsula looking toward Campbell Island (which is in Canada and favorite playground of F.D.R).

Can you name the large cash crop comes from this area? I’ll give you a hint. They are blue. Right! Blueberries are grown on the rocky barrens throughout the Downeast area of the state (and many other areas too). And the blueberry barrens in autumn are indeed a beautiful sight to behold – incredible waves of red that only mother nature could provide.
