Bethel is Western Maine’s boom town. Sunday River Ski Area is located just up the road from this beautiful little village in Newry. It also has great summertime activities like mountain biking, zip lines and hiking or lift rides to the top. Mt. Abrams is also close by in Greenwood.

The Sunday River Brew Pub is located at the corner of Rt.2 and Sunday River Road and there are other great eateries on the way to the mountain and in downtown Bethel. The Good Food Store is a place to stop for some wholesome vittles and there is some beautiful Shaker Furniture to be found at Timberlake’s Shaker Furniture on Rt.2. The Bethel Inn has the local golf resort and The Suds Pub at The Sudbury Inn is a good place to grab a pint before hitting the hay. Cafe Dicocoa’s   is your first stop for coffee and pastries in the morning.

The Androscoggin River runs through town and is a great paddle for canoe or kayak with several launch sites on the river in Bethel, West Bethel and Gilead. Some pretty decent fishing, too.  The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is located in downtown Bethel, as the area is the Tourmaline capital of the world. Or you can stop at  Bethel Outdoor Center or Dig Maine Gems in Woodstock and get a bucket of dirt and rock to look through from one of the area mines to find your own gems.
