January 2004 Fishing Report
December of 2003 started out cold and snowy dumping 35 inches of snow in southern Maine but finished off with a wimper. Warm unseasonable weather and rain moved in the last part of the month and continued into the first week of January. Not the weather we had hoped to start the ice fishing season with as we still look for that arctic blast that will hopefully freeze the bigger lakes.
Sebago Lake and many lakes along the coastal areas are ice free or unsafe for fishing but we took a ride and checked out many of the smaller lakes and ponds of northern Cumberland County and Southern Oxford County and found out some great news - many of these lakes and ponds in the foothills are indeed safe for foot travel (if not for motorized vehicles). We did a large loop through the lakes region and found many ponds like Worthley in Poland, Crystal in Harrison, The North end of Long Lake, Highland in Bridgton already have 8-9 inches of solid ice. So as long as you stay away from flowages where ice conditions remain thin and unsafe there's pleanty of ice to start the season. Now that may mean traveling for many coastal residents but its definately worth the miles to get to some great conditions to start the new year right.
So fire up the ice auger and give out that mighty yell - "GO PATS!!!"
