January 2003 Fishing Report
Time to dust off your ice fishing traps, check your lines and make sure your ice auger has sharp blades. That's right... it's ice fishing time again and this year we are off to a great start for the season.
We took our annual Christmas week ride through the lakes region to check out ice conditions and found that we are already about a month ahead of where we were this time last year. Though Sebago remains ice free, the lakes and ponds in the foothills of northern Cumberland and Oxford Counties are already thick with ice. Thick being a relative term - you should always check out any unfamiliar waters before you venture forth especially near flowages.
We did the big loop from Portland to Naples up Rt 35 to Harrison and found Long Lake completely frozen over . Crystal Lake in Harrison had 4-5 inches of solid ice as did ponds through the Waterford and Albany Township regions. In comparison these same ponds were in shakey condition until the 2nd week of January last year that means plenty of fishing opportunities on opening day this year.
We cut back through Bridgton and the western foothills and found much of the same conditions on Moose Pond and lakes and ponds in the Sebago Lakes Region. Small ponds are plenty thick with ice at least for walking and soon should be able to support ATV's and snowmobiles. Take care near the shore where the suns warmth can thin the edges and near pressure ridges.
Stay warm and stay dry.
