Fall Fishing Report
October / November / December
Red and golden leaves cascading through the sky on a frosty morning. Crisp, cool with a hint of winter nipping at the clouds. This is fall in Maine.
And though many put down their rods with the first football huddle of fall there's often many great mornings and afternoons worthy of getting out there and having a go of it.
Regular freshwater season officially ends on September 30 for the majority of waters in the state but there are many great fall fishing spots that remain open and some that remain open year round. Special rules exist everywhere this time of year so consult your rule book. Open dates and gear restrictions vary.
Sea run brown trout are often stocked in eary October in some of the coastal rivers in southern Maine. The Webhannet River,Ogunquit River and Mousam are often times fall hotspots. In Cumberland County the Royal and Spurwink are also good places to try where the freshwater meets the brackish water. The Presumpscot remains open year round and spots along the upper stretches can remain ice free even after the first snows.
Many lakes also remain open in the southern part of the state and some of the biggest fish of the year can be had trolling these late fall days. Salmon can be had a locations like Thompson Lake as the big fish come up out of the depths and get that urge to frolic in the autumn mist.
And remember -- ice fishing season is just around the corner. So sharpen your auger and start getting your gear in order.
